It is 1913, and Miss Sophie’s 40th birthday. Her four guests are alive and well and eager to help her celebrate - but each has his own expectations and ambitions (which are more than matched by those of the hostess herself!). As the dinner progresses, the secrets and rivalries of all are revealed, leading to the dramatic ending that explains why "...the same procedure as every year" is still being repeated!
